Public Service Announcement
ART 235 | Poster Assignment
Project Summary:
For project 3, we were asked to create a series of three, professional, print ad posters that could be used in a Public Service Announcement (PSA) print campaign. These ads need to be topics that can be comfortably shown to future employers of all backgrounds.

The goal of this assignment is to learn how to generate original, clear ideas and to produce a clear, quick-communicating, conceptually-strong PSA poster set.

Harmony Haven (non-profit organization of my creation) in conjunction with The Ad Council have hired me, Becky Hutchings, to develop a three-piece print campaign.

Veteran Campaign
According to the 2022 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, the suicide rate among veterans in 2020 was 57% higher than non-veteran adults in the US. Tragically, more than 6,000 US Military veterans died by suicide in 2020. Stressful life events like divorce, job loss, substance use, or housing troubles can be risk factors for suicide.

Many Veterans battle with internal and external stigmas when it comes to seeking help, especially mental health services and support. Internally, veterans can feel that they don’t deserve support because they believe other veterans have faced worse circumstances. Externally, military culture can ingrain in Veterans that they need to work through their struggles on their own, or view seeking help as a sign of weakness.

This campaign encourages veterans to recognize that despite the challenges they are facing in life, they are not alone. The goal is for veterans and all adults to nature their relationship with their mind the same way they care for their closest personal relationships.

The veteran community faces unique challenges, and each veteran has their own unique story. We believe that by bringing together the brightest minds, the most creative talents and top mental health experts we can reach people where they are, we can connect them with the tools they need and together we can accelerate impact on their mental health issues.

The posters use a stark, high-quality image of a headless man to catch the user's attention, and the various designs that are placed where the head would normally be is designed to signify that there's something wrong with mental health and the Veterans transition back into civilian life. The font gives a feeling of authority and strength to mimic the skills Veterans learned throughout their military service. Veterans being in all caps lets the viewer know who this campaign's audience is. The logos at the bottom are modern. They give a simplistic feeling that doesn't distract from the design, and the call to action is simple and inviting.
